“Frustrated with impersonal, ineffective, symptom-centric medical approaches, a growing number of patients are searching for better solutions. And they are finding them in the field of Functional Medicine, a radical new model for how to practice medicine and treat chronic disease.”
What is Functional Medicine? Here is the description from the Institute of Functional Medicine:
Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual. – See more at: https://www.functionalmedicine.org/
Many doctors have taken this training and some are specializing in it now. And, it’s catching on quickly as people learn that there are now healing answers to their health problems. Don’t get me wrong, the answers are not necessarily quick and easy. Getting sick takes time and so does healing but it’s not the impossible battle you may have been led to believe. There is a blueprint that can be followed to get to the root case and create a map back to health. This is very different from the conventional blueprint of covering up symptoms with pharmaceutical drugs.
I’ve used the training I’ve received from FM Practitioners to heal my own body and I’ve also heard lots of wonderful results from others who’ve taken this path. So, I encourage you to look into it if you are not currently satisfied with your health practitioner. You can check for a practitioner near you here.
Unfortunately, most insurance plans do not cover the extensive testing that is necessary to get to the root problem but you may be able to get some of your expenses covered by using a medical doctor turned FM Practitioner. Actually, it’s sort of ironic that the lack of insurance coverage is part of the reason doctors are attracted to this new modality. It creates more cash flow in their business and they don’t have the hassle of insurance paperwork and waiting for payments from the insurance company.
You may also find that hiring a modern health coach can be a very good option as well. They should be familiar with how to read many of the new lab reports that are available today. They will, of course, encourage you to get these labs done in order to know what type of healing modality and nutrition you need. And, since they are not a practicing doctor, they can guide you to know when you need to see a Functional Medical Practitioner.
When I was sick, none of my doctors helped me much. Even when I told them I had adrenal fatigue, nothing was done until it was so bad, I could no longer function. It was only then, when I repeated this fact for about the 10th time, that the doctor finally treated me.
Functional Medical Practitioners spend time with you and know that it’s necessary in order to get a full history of your illness so they understand what testing is needed to get to the root of the problem. They know that the 15 minute doctor visit with a band-aid approach does not get the job done. So, I’m really excited about the FMP practitioners and have listened to many of the online health summits that these doctors are holding regularly.
In your search for a FM Practitioner, I encourage you to visit their web site and call their office to speak with the staff. Find out what their back story is, how they got into FMP and how they approach a new patient. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find the right doctor the first time.
Sign up to the newsletter list and I’ll let you know when a new health summit is being broadcast. They are usually free to listen to for the first 24 hours.
